About The Artist

John Gallagher Wood Carver has been located in Morristown, Arizona area since 1965.  He started carving when he was three years old.  He is a third generation chain saw wood carver.  His father Ralph Gallagher built up a family business, Gallagher and Sons in which John and his brother Frank Gallagher worked with there father carving Indians.

Cigar Store Indians, characters from the Old West and fantastic creatures all inhabit the world of artist, John Gallagher.  With a chainsaw and a variety of carving tools and chisels John transforms logs into sculpture.

John’s most popular carving is the Cigar Store Indian, which can range in height from two to eight feet.  He has also carved Cowboys, Cowgirls, Corn Maidens, Casino Bandits, Mermaids, Vultures, and much, much more!

Wood carving comes naturally to artist, John Gallagher.  Son of famed woodcarver Ralph Gallagher, John started working with wood and tools as a toddler at his father’s knee.  His first sale of a twelve inch Indian couple was to the Morristown post master who displayed them at the post office until her retirement.

John is a native of Wickenburg, Arizona.  This picture of John was in the September-October issue of Cowboys and Indians Magazine 2005.
